We’re all horrified when we go to someone else’s house and notice a beat-up frying pan leaking toxins into dinner, but its easy to overlook the other toxins in our kitchen.
Replace plastic food storage containers with glass:
- These awesome glass containers are square to allow me to stack them and fit them into the refrigerator easily AND they have a glass lid. Most glass containers still have a plastic lid, which is fine if no food is touching it, but the glass lid is especially great for those of us who use tomato sauce in cooking or who overfill our containers. Warning: These containers get replaced often with a newer version, making the old containers obsolete. If possible, buy extra so you don’t get stuck with mismatched sets.
- Urban Green 23 oz glass containers are great for most leftovers or for taking a meal to work for lunch.
- Urban Green 10-27 oz are great if you would prefer to have a variety of sizes for smaller leftovers as well. I actually prefer this range of sizes and would recommend at least two sets to start.
- Pantry Canisters:
- Unfortunately, Anchor Hocking seems to be discontinuing these fabulous pantry canisters. There are a few still available online but I hope they will bring them back. One Quart and 1-1/2 Quart canisters great for specialty flours, seeds, and nuts.
- Ball Stackable Canisters are a little less streamlined but have a slightly wider mouth.
- These pasta canisters are more breakable but look good. They are also more affordable. Note that the bamboo lids are food safe but not dishwasher safe.

- Cookware:
- This one is a bit tricky because every time I find cookware I love, I soon find out that it either doesn’t wear as well as claimed or that it does contain toxins. There is currently only one type of cookware I’ve found that has not yet been discovered to have problems and its expensive!
